Why is training recommended for pet dogs?

Training makes dogs mentally and physically healthy. Part of the training is to keep the pets healthy by playing or walking them regularly. It is recommended for all breeds and sizes especially the ones exhibiting uncontrolled behavior such as excessive barking.

Excessive barking could be an indicator that your dog needs exercise and training. Some dogs bark loudly all the time because they are bored and sad. They may be calling the owner’s attention because they want to play or simply asking for interaction. When they get tired from physical activities, they can have a restful sleep since the extra energy they have has been released during the training.

Training helps both the pet dog and the owner to develop a good relationship. Since it is recommended to practice positive training, reward system is advisable when teaching your pet dog new skills and tricks. During the training sessions, the professional trainer will encourage the owner to show appreciation when the dog manifest good behavior and adaptation of new learnings.

Physical punishment such as hitting and also yelling is strictly discouraged. Trainers instruct the owners to take away the reward like food or dog treats when they do not want to obey or coordinate. Negative punishments can make the pet dog aggressive because they are just copying what they see.

There also available training classes for older dogs. People think only puppies are allowed to enroll in such activities but according to studies, age is not really important in correcting the behavior of a canine and for new life skills.

Positive reinforcement and training should be the approach if you are looking for a professional trainer or training school for dogs. Give your dogs the best care by enrolling them as soon as you can.

Things you should know about dog’s behavior

Pet owners want the best for their dogs all the time. They give everything the dog needs or likes even if they do not know if it is still the right thing to do. There are things that you should understand when it comes to dog’s behavior and these are the following:

  • Dogs repeat doing reinforced behavior – if you reward your dog for good behavior like for example if your pet obeys your command to “sit” right away and you gave him a treat in return, the dog will learn to do the same thing all over again. Every time the dog sees you, it will automatically sit because of the reward.
  • Dogs avoid doing unrewarded behavior – they say that if your dog is doing an excessive barking and there is no stimulus or anything causing it, simply ignore the dog’s behavior. They sometimes act wild or aggressive to catch the attention of the owner and just like kids, they become spoiled when they get what they want. If you ignore your pet’s howling or non-stop barking, they will not do the same thing again next time thinking that their behavior is not effective to call attention and never reinforced with any reward.
  • Dogs get bored and unhappy – if they are left alone or in a secluded area, they feel lonely and will definitely look for attention from their owners. They have the tendency to act strange or aggressive when with other animals or people.
  • Dogs can suffer from depression and anxiety disorders – if the pet dog is unhappy for a long time and no physical and mental enrichment is given, they can be sick and be depressed. Aggression such as excessive barking could be a sign of mental problem. Professional help is needed to cure this problem.

Can you prevent excessive barking

One of the most common issues about dogs is their excessive barking. Many pet owners have encountered non-stop and loud barking of their pet dogs due to behavioral problem and lack of proper training. Neighbors may complain about the noise created by your pet especially during the wee hours. This may lead to misunderstanding and more serious concerns.

Anti-bark collars are becoming popular and high demand in many countries as replacement for professional training classes which is not a good idea. The said collars are used moderately and should not be the only tool to calm the aggressive barking.

Trainers will never approve aversive conditioning or negative punishment training because they believe it will not correct the behavior of the pet dogs and it will only worsen the unwanted behavior. But lately, more kinds of collars were out in the market aside from the well-known shock collar.

Shock collars or also called electronic collars produce a mild uncomfortable shock every time the dog becomes wild and loud. Some shock collars has a remote control gadget.

The most common anti-bark collar is the Citronella Collar because it is the safest among the devices. It is proven to be harmless on both animals and humans. Although the citronella spray can get empty right away so, you have to keep more stocks.

Another one is the ultrasonic anti-bark collar. Dogs will hear a very high pitched sound when they bark. This is also safe to use but many owners say their dogs ignore the sound when they learned that it is a device to interrupt their barking.

Remember, these collars are not intended for punishment. These are use as part of behavioral training and conditioning. Instead of physical punishment, collars are used to control the unwanted barking and aggression.

Basic commands for dog training

If you are the person who does not want to hire a professional trainer and you think you can do it by yourself, then these basic commands may help you begin with the behavioral conditioning that you want to apply on your pet dog.

  • Sit – you can show your pet dog a treat on your hand, an as you say the word “sit” you must assist your dog by putting its lower back on sitting position. When the dog understood the command, give him a treat and pat his back or head.
  • Stay – Before you give this order make sure that your dog knows how to obey the sit command very well. Ask your dog to sit then slowly move backwards while showing your hand gesture as a sign of wait or hold on. If your dog can do it even for a while, show him that you appreciate the progress by rewarding him right away.
  • Come – this one is easier to practice. All you need is a leash and collar. Ask your dog to “come” while pulling the leash gently towards yourself.

There are more commands that your dog should learn such as down, roll-over, leave it, heel but these activities may be difficult and will need a lot of patience and time in able for your dog to master everything.

Just keep in mind that when you train your dog, do not have high expectations during the first few sessions. Always practice the positive training style. Do not hurt or pressure your dog through punishments unless you are doing a reward-punishment conditioning which is still part of positive reinforcement. Raising a good dog is not that easy, it requires time, patience and affection.
